Indiana Middle School Teacher Bethany Appleton Busted for Having Sex With Students

Shelbyville, Indiana (Sinister Existence)

A 28-year-old teacher at Shelbyville Middle School has been jailed after police say she allegedly had sex with multiple students and provided them with alcohol and marijuana.

According to police, Bethany Appleton was taken into custody following an investigation by the Indiana Department of Child Services.

Investigators say Appleton’s sexual activity with the students happened over the course of a year. In at least one instance, Appleton had sex with a student at her residence after drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana with the minor.

The alleged sexual encounters took place between April 2011 and May 2012. Police have not yet released the age of the alleged victims and say the investigation continues.

On the Shelbyville School District’s website, Appleton's bio states:

"I love it here and I love what I am doing. I have always wanted to be a teacher and am so glad that I have the opportunity to work with so many great teachers and students."

School officials have announced that Appleton no longer works for the district.

Appleton was booked into jail and charged with 13 counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, child seduction, maintaining a common nuisance and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. According to police, additional charges may follow.

Bethany Appleton also has a personal teacher/classroom website that gives a more detailed bio, including:

My name is Bethany Appleton. I am originally from Trafalgar, Indiana. I graduated from Indian Creek High School in 2002, where I was involved in student council, 4-H, band, and my church youth group. I also made time to manage the football, boys' basketball, and baseball teams at my high school. After high school, I attended Hanover College were I was a member of the ISEA (Indiana Student Educator's Association), managed the football team, and worked in the school's athletic center. I graduated in May of 2006 with my degree in Sociology and after completing my student teaching at Winchester Village Elementary in the Fall of 2006, I received my degree in Elementary Education in December of 2006.

I worked at Webb Elementary as a kindergarten teacher and a second grade assistant in the Winter/Spring of 2007. During the school year of 2007/2008, I was a special education assistant at Indian Creek Middle/High School. I really enjoyed this job and it got me thinking that I wanted a career in special education.

I was hired as a Mild Disabilities teacher to teach here at Shelbyville Middle School two days before school started in the Fall of 2008. It was a stressful time, but I love it here and I love what I am doing. I had to go back to school to get my Special Education degree from Indiana Wesleyan to keep my job so I spent 18 months teaching full time and taking online classes full time. I liked Indiana Wesleyan so much that I am currently getting my master's degree through them.

Teaching runs in my family. My dad teaches 4th grade, my mom teaches 3rd grade, and my brother has his health/PE education license. All three of them work at Indian Creek schools. I have always wanted to be a teacher and am so glad that I have the opportunity to work with so many great teachers and students here at Shelbyville Middle School. GO GOLDEN BEARS!!!!
