Texas Sheriff Offers Sex Advice to Offshore Tech Conference Attendees: ‘Think Before You Drill’

Harris County, Texas Sheriff Adrian Garcia warns of hazardous drilling

Houston, Texas

Tens of thousands of people from all over the world are in Houston this week for the 2013 Offshore Technology Conference, otherwise known as the OTC.

And when a large group of men and women get together to talk about drilling and lubrication, we all know how things can get out of hand. However, my dear travelers, before the drilling begins, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia has a message:

The sheriff's goal is to remind you that buying and selling sex is illegal.

"Whether you solicit online or on the streets, you are going to be caught," Garcia said.

Authorities say that the business of sex generally spikes during the annual oil and gas conference.

A quick check of Craigslist shows several ads from men who say they're in town for the conference and looking for a good time.

Over on Backpage.com, another site known for sex ads, reveals similar results, like the following:

For some reason, in spite of the warnings, I wonder how many mugshots I will be able to find by week's end? Just remember, with all of the other violent crimes apparently under control in Houston, the good sheriff will be watching you.

"If you are going to go out and buy sex, you will be arrested, gain a criminal record and you could possibly lose your family and job."

A spokesperson for OTC would not comment on this issue, saying only that it is not in their "domain."
