Police in Miami shot dead a naked man as he ate the face of another man. Investigators believe the victim was homeless and lying down on the side of the road when he was attacked.
The incident happened around 2:00pm local time Saturday near Miami's busy Biscayne Boulevard.
Police say a road ranger saw a naked man chewing another man's face on the side of the MacArthur Causeway off-ramp and shouted on his loud speaker for the attacker to back away.
Apparently, the face was too good to let go, so the man paid no attention to police orders. So, the officer fired one shot at the flesh-eating man. Witnesses say that even after the shot, the naked man continued his gruesome attack. That led the officer to fire a total of six shots in order to bring the feeding frenzy to a halt.
Javier Ortiz, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police in Miami, said the officer who fired the fatal shots was "a hero."
According to investigators, they believe the victim may have been homeless and laying down when the modern-day cannibal began the assault.
About half of the victim's face was chewed off, and he is fighting for his life with critical injuries, police said.
Police also said the naked man might have been suffering from "cocaine psychosis," a drug-induced craze that makes a person very hot, which could have led him to strip off his clothes.
The incident came as thousands of people descended on South Beach for the annual Urban Beach Week hip-hop festival.
