The head football coach at George Jenkins High School is in the spotlight, but not because of his coaching abilities. Matt Thompson has been arrested and charged after having sex with a teenage girl.
The 30-year-old Thompson faces two counts of sexual battery by a person of custodial authority, according to the arrest affidavit.
Police arrested Thompson at his home. Sheriff Grady Judd said Thompson's case involves a 17-year-old girl, a student at George Jenkins High School. Judd said Thompson invited the girl to his home on three occasions and twice engaged in sex with her.
Judd described Thompson as a person of “authority and power” over students.
According to Judd, the investigation into Thompson began when someone from the community called to tell him about the possible relationship between Thompson and a student. Thompson, who is also known as “the dude,” was arrested 24 hours later.
“The dude knew better and now he is going to jail,” Judd said during the press conference.
The Sheriff is also encouraging any other victims to come forward.
Thompson has a history of trouble involving teenagers. He was the subject of another investigation by the Polk County School District after being accused of harassing and humiliating football players he was coaching.
Thompson is currently being held at the Polk County Jail.
