Police interrupted a burglary at a cemetery on Monday night. They received a call about two men trespassing at Santa Cruz Memorial Park.
Police say when they arrived, they found the men attempting to get into the crematorium. They apparently were intent on taking their friend's corpse off the cemetery grounds.
Police identified the two as Nicolas Canavarro of Redding, California and David Sada of Scotts Valley, California.
The police said Sada was visibly drunk and Canavarro tried to kick in a locked door.
Canavarro was booked on attempted burglary charges. Sada was booked on suspicion of public drunkenness.
The suspects declined to share why they were hoping to recover their friend’s corpse, and it’s unknown if the corpse had already been cremated.
