Just outside of Houston, in a quiet suburb of The Woodlands, one neighborhood’s Memorial Day was interrupted by gunfire. At first, residents thought it might be fireworks. However, one neighbor made a gruesome discovery in the backyard of another home.
Dr. Karen Gunn, a prominent veterinarian in the area was found dead in her backyard, while her husband lay dead nearby. Investigators have ruled the incident a murder-suicide.
"It appears the husband and wife had been separated for many months," said Detective Dan Zientek of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.
Employees at Karen Gunn’s veterinary office in Spring said the slain doctor had filed for divorce back in November, and a month later, husband Graham Gunn showed up at the office with a handgun.
But he was never arrested and never charged with a crime.
Instead, clinic security was revamped, and attorneys for both Mr. and Dr. Gunn agreed that he would stay 500 feet away from the vet clinic, Karen Gunn’s home and the children’s schools. Graham Gunn worked for Hewlett Packard.
However, that changed shortly before 4 pm on Memorial Day. Investigators said Graham Gunn arrived at his estranged wife’s home unannounced. He reportedly confronted Karen Gunn in her backyard, then shot her and turned the gun on himself. Detectives located Graham Gunn's sports car parked down the street.
The couple’s two children, ages 8 and 10, were home at the time and ran for help. Investigators say one of the children witnessed the incident.
"This has been a nightmare we’ve been living for six months," Melissa Lemons, an employee of Dr. Gunn’s, said. "Every time we would think things were getting better, he would pop up or do something to remind us that he was still out there, and things weren’t getting any better."
The Gunns were scheduled to appear in court on June 4 to have their divorce and custody arrangements for their kids finalized.
